Asterial Dance

Artistic Statement

I am an artist. All artists create, innovate, and inspire through a specific medium. As a choreographer, my medium is the human body. The human body is capable of not only moving in innumerable simple and complex ways, but capable of portraying emotion.

Using both the physical and emotional spheres, I create statements about the things I see, hear, and think. These statements are manifested through live performance. What makes dance unlike any other form of art is that dance has no permanence. The art exists in the moment; as soon as the lights fade and the curtain closes, it is lost. All that is left is the impact left on the audience. What is left behind is not seen or heard, it is felt by those who are looking for it. It is the transformation of energy into heat.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. As dancers, we are transformers of the air, the earth, and the space around us. You cannot see the energy transform, but the air feels different after each and every dance. It is lighter and free or heavier and bound, depending on the nature of the performance. And if you know how to look, you sense the presence of a deep thought, meaning, and beauty after the dance is finished. The space will never be the same again. It is constantly transformed by dance.

The word Asterial means “of or relating to the stars.”  I believe that as choreographers and dancers we are like stars: giant balls of energy that radiate out, impacting the world. With dynamic power and passion, dancers put into movement what others express with words, providing a light into the most intimate thoughts and emotions of the human experience.

Through Asterial Dance, I feel called to:

Energize audiences through moving, living art by closing the gap between the choreographer’s message behind the work and the perceived intent;

Enhance the creativity, artistry, passion, and drive of youth in the community and aspiring dancers; and

Enlighten the community about the importance of performing arts education and to further its integration into our every day lives.
